A huge thanks to Robert Barron and Tia Kelly for coordinating this year’s Staff appreciation week.  BEC employees enjoyed Fat Sully’s Pizza Slice Truck, The Denver Biscuit Bus, Happy hour at the Archive Room as well as Waffles by Ron Olson.  

Team Orange won the overall points in the games – Patty, Mike Lane, Josh, Tonya, Scott Lasater, Patrick, Ron and Steve.

Denver has more small businesses than most large cities

Metro Denver ranks 17th among 938 U.S. cities for its number of local businesses, but a higher proportion of those companies are small than most other large urban areas.

That’s according to data collected by G. Scott Thomas, whose “On Numbers” blog covers demographic trends for The Business Journals, our national online business news partner.

Thomas compiled new U.S. Census Bureau data on businesses and employment.

The Denver-Aurora metro area (not including Boulder County) has 73,916 businesses, ranking 17th in the nation. But its average number of employees per business — 14.38 — ranks only 427th out of 938 U.S. cities, with first being the city with the most workers per business.

In fact, out of the nation’s 20 largest urban areas, only three have fewer average workers per business than Denver: New York (13.91 employees per business), Miami-Fort Lauderdale (10.93), and Tampa-St. Petersburg (13.71).

Many business leaders in Denver have long complained about the Mile High City’s lack of large locally based companies, although one Fortune 500 company — DaVita — recently moved its headquarters here, and another — Arrow Electronics — arrives later this month.

Smashburger promoted Greg Creighton to President

Smashburger has promoted chief operating officer Greg Creighton to president and has hired two additional vice presidents to support the company for continued growth and expansion, the Denver-based fast-casual restaurant chain announced Wednesday.

Creighton will take on an extended leadership role to help drive business strategy at Smashburger, according to a news release.

The company hired Chris Chang, the former vice president at private-equity firm and Smashburger parent company Consumer Capital Partners, as its senior vice president of finance and strategy. And it has brought on Doug Thielen, former manager of non-traditional marketing and public relations for Qdoba Restaurant Corp.    .Qdoba Restaurant Corp. 2011 Shamrock Food Show – Denver

What a great experience for our staff to attend the annual Shamrock Food Show. As always, this is a special event each year in support of Shamrock Foods and the restaurant industry of Denver.

This year’s Shamrock show was again, a great success. BEC was able to talk with many new potential clients and to make sure all of our current clients are well taken care of.
